Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a high-speed link for external (or internal) peripherals. Hard drives, mice, keyboards, and video cameras are common USB-connected pieces of equipment.
Apple Inc. has repeatedly tried to compete with it with Thunderbolt and Firewire interfaces but has mostly failed. It hasn't stopped them from making new connectors like the Lightning Connector that provided benefits, which eventually made it into the USB-C standard.
